Nell Minow Joins Roger Ebert's New Show

OFCS member Nell Minow has joined the roster of contributors for Roger Ebert's new television program, Ebert Presents At the Movies. The show is a revival of the classic franchise that began in 1975 as Opening Soon at a Theater Near You and temporarily ended in 2010 as At the Movies. The new series, which premiered last week, features in-depth segments from film experts from around the world, all hand-picked by Roger Ebert himself - including "Movie Mom" Nell Minow.

FlickFilosopher.com Moving to London

OFCS member MaryAnn Johanson has announced she's relocated to London "for a British sojourn of indeterminate length," and she's taken her website, The Flick Filosopher, with her. She writes:

"Business will continue as usual at the site, as I cover new releases and classic films, with additional coverage of the movie scene in the U.K. I am looking forward to meeting film fans and professional colleagues on the other side of the pond."

The OFCS wishes MaryAnn the best of luck with her move and looks forward to her expanded take on British cinema.

Phil Hall to Launch Underground Film Festival

OFCS member Phil Hall has announced the launch of the First Annual New England Underground Film Festival, a one-day event to be held October 8 in New Haven, Connecticut. Hall, the author of The Encyclopedia of Underground Movies, previously served as the director of the New Haven Underground Film Festival.

The festival hopes to celebrate all shapes of underground and experimental film. More information, including a call for entries, can be found at the festival's website.

"The Social Network" Named Best Picture In the OFCS Awards

The Social Network, the dramatized examination of the personalities and incidents behind the launch of the Facebook social media movement, was named Best Picture in the 14th annual Online Film Critics Society Awards. The film also won in the categories of Best Director (David Fincher) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin).

The OFCS Awards for acting were divided among a quartet of productions: Colin Firth in The King’s Speech for Best Actor, Natalie Portman in Black Swan for Best Actress, Christian Bale in The Fighter for Best Supporting Actor and Hailee Steinfield in True Grit for Best Supporting Actress. True Grit was also honored for Roger Deakins' cinematography.

Inception received two awards: Christopher Nolan for Best Original Screenplay and Lee Smith for Best Editing. Toy Story 3 was named Best Animated Feature, Exit Through the Gift Shop received the Best Documentary Award, and the South Korean production Mother was named Best Picture Not in the English Language.
